Carassius auratus auratus
Size: up tp 6" in aquarium pH: 6.5 - 7.5 Temp: 62 -85F KH: 4-20 Origin: Japan The Lionhead Goldfish is by far the most popular and well known of the dorsal less goldfish. Rather than having the long slender body of the Common Goldfish or the Shubunkins, the Lionhead Goldfish is one of the more rounded or egg-shaped fancy gold fish. They have a double caudal (tail) fin and a double anal fin. This goldfish variety is very similar to the Ranchu Goldfish that was highly developed Japan. The Lionhead can be distinguished by a less curved countour shape to its back. Also, its caudal fin is quite similar to that of the Fantail Goldfish, while the Ranchu has a tail fin that splays out to the sides, often being almost horizontal. Lionheads were bred in China to depict the image of the mythical Chinese lion-dog (the shishi, in Japanese legend). They were introduced to Japan from China during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Japanese produced lionheads with more rounded back profiles, modified tails and diminished size of the head growth Lionheads are rather slow swimmers so they should only be housed with other slow moving goldfish. They can reach a physical length of around five to six inches, and have a lifespan of five to ten years. Lionheads prefer water temperatures above 60 F in an aquarium. Although all of our fish are farm raised and not imports, our Koi, Ranchu and Lionheads ARE Imports from Japan. We generally ship our Lionheads out at about a 3 to 4" size. No hand picking available at these prices. Goldfish - Lionhead Assorted Colors
