The Red Empress is very stunning in its adult male colors. It is an endemic species found only in Lake Malawi, Africa, but there are a number of color variations depending on where in the lake they originate. This color variety is one of the most sought after in the hobby.
Haplochromine cichlids like a lot of swimming room and will do best in a larger aquarium. This cichlid is one of the best for cleaning algae off of rocks, as this is its primary food source in nature. This is a mild-mannered fish that will thrive best in large groups.
