Hovering Zebra Loach
Micronemacheilus cruciatus aka Yunnanilus cruciatus

A Hovering Zebra Loach, scientifically known as Micronemacheilus cruciatus or Yunnanilus cruciatus, is a small, peaceful loach species native to Vietnam. They are known for their unique behavior of occasionally hovering in midwater and for their distinctive zebra-like stripes. They are also bottom feeders and scavengers, contributing to cleaning the aquarium substrate.

Hovering Zebra Loaches are small, typically reaching 1-1.5″ 3-4 cm in length. They have a slender body and a distinctive pattern of zebra-like stripes. They are social fish and thrive in groups. They are known for their unique hovering behavior, often seen in midwater. They also commonly swim head down, using their sensory barbels to explore the substrate for food.

In the wild, they inhabit the shallow, still parts of rivers with dense vegetation, mud, and sand. To keep them happy in an aquarium, provide a soft substrate like sand to protect their barbels, gentle water movement, and ample hiding places. They are sensitive to changes in water parameters, so a mature aquarium is recommended.
