Mexican papayas
Carica papaya

aka: Maradol papaya, Caribbean Red papaya, Caribbean Sunrise papaya, and Red papaya, PawPaw

Mexican papayas are a large fragrant fruit native to tropical regions of Central America and Southern Mexico, belonging to the Caricaceae family. Papayas grow directly from the base of a large herb, just below the leaves, which is often incorrectly labeled as a tree. The fast-growing herb rivals the size of large trees, averaging three meters (10 feet) in height, and sometimes reaches up to nine meters in warm, humid climates. Mexican papayas are one of two main types of papayas found worldwide. The other is Hawaiian papayas. Within each type, there are many different varieties with varying appearances and flavors. Mexican papayas are much larger than Hawaiian papayas and generally have a milder flavor profile. Mexican papayas are favored for their soft, sweet flesh and are incorporated into a wide variety of fresh and cooked preparations worldwide.

Mexican papayas are large fruits averaging anywhere between 6-20″ in length, depending on the variety, and have an oval to pyriform shape. The skin is thin, semi-smooth, waxy, bearing variegated hues of bright yellow, orange, and pale green when ripe. Underneath the surface, the flesh ranges in color from red, orange, yellow to pink and has a soft, dense, and aqueous consistency. In the center of the flesh, there is also an elongated cavity filled with a thin layer of white fibrous tissue that encases many small, round, and shiny black seeds. The seeds are edible, containing a peppery, slightly bitter flavor, and have a crunchy, slippery texture as they are covered in a gelatinous coating. Mexican papayas have a mild, sweet, and musky flavor with tropical, fruity undertones.

Nutritional Value
Mexican papayas are an excellent source of vitamin C, an antioxidant that strengthens the immune system, reduces inflammation, and protects the cells against free radical damage. The fruits are also rich in calcium to protect bones and teeth, potassium to balance fluid levels within the body, vitamin A to maintain healthy organ functioning, and are a source of folate, fiber, iron, and magnesium. In addition to vitamins and minerals, Mexican papayas contain a beneficial enzyme known as papain that helps break down proteins for more efficient digestion.

Mexican Papaya are very easy to grow especially when you have the best seeds on the planet! We started our very first papaya seeds indoors in August in some small 4″ pots, by June the following year we had 5 foot+ trees with fruit on them! We could’ve grown them on the patio or in a greenhouse, but with our mild sub tropical weather here in Arizona we planed them in the ground in several spots on our farm. Even when we got to 28F degrees, the plants only lost their leaves and the fruit stayed attached to the trunk. By the time Spring came, the trees were putting out new leaves rapidly and the fruit went from Green to Orange and we started eating our own home grown organic Papaya! Folks in warmer climates like SoCal, Phoenix, Florida, Hawaii will likely not see any dormancy and the Papaya will stay evergreen.

Germination Times and Growth Rates

Seeds and plants are like humans, they all grow differently! We cannot predict how quickly your seeds will germinate, nor can we predict how fast your plants will grow. All seeds and plants are unique and must be nurtured properly in a suitable environment. Because every plant is unique and every growing environment is unique your results will vary.

Seeds From our Farm
Growing Practices and such

We do our best to give you the essentials for starting your seeds, but we’re unable to provide every detail for planting. It’s important to do your research as well. Though we wish we could guarantee the success of every seed and plant once it is planted, we can’t. Pests, planting outside of recommended growing zones, neglect, extreme weather damage, drought, disease and poor soil conditions can impact your chances of success. There are too many variables to hold our farm accfountable. Plants are living organisms and are subject to unpredictable conditions every day. However, we do our best to ensure that you are getting a quality product. Selling plants, seeds, livestock, fish & eggs are our business. We strive to build customer relationships based on trust and reliability and have done so since 1987, our customers know 100% we are good, decent, kind, honest people. If you have any questions about plant hardiness or the best trees and plants for your area, it is suggested to contact your local County Agricultural Extension Office.
