Description

Crab – Red Devil Crab

Geosesarma bicolor Dennerle

How about adding some of the most beautifully colored crabs to your collection of critters in your aquarium? This Geosesarma crab is quite social amongst each other so it is recommended they be kept in larger groups or colonies together. These freshwater tropical Red Devil Crabs reach about one inch, and about 2″-2.5″ with spread legs, (smaller than Mini Fiddler Crabs). They have two small claws that are uniform in size. The claws do not open very wide and are NOT able to pinch you! They are not aggressive with each other or anything similar in size. A half a dozen crabs will happily reside in a 5 gallon tank. The Red Devil Crab was a newly described species from Sulawesi (Indonesia) in 2011. Red Devil Crabs are primarily a terrestrial species that lives in the forest near sources of running water but one of the most exciting things about these crabs is that they are one of the few crabs that have evolved to be totally non dependent upon the ocean to reproduce. Most crabs, even land crabs, need to make a seasonal trip to the ocean to reproduce. Their eggs are very small and they hatch into a microscopic planktonic state, which develops at sea to return to the land as a tiny crab after metamorphosis at sea. BUT, the Red Devil is a rare true freshwater species that has developed a reproductive cycle that is direct in that the large eggs hatch out into small, but fully developed crabs.

Little is known about these Red Devil Crabs in captivity. We have been keeping them since 2010 and they have proven quite hardy to us and many other people all over the world. A “Paludarium” type aquarium is a perfect habitat as well as an aquarium that may have driftwood or lookout rocks for them to peer from. Red Devil Crabs are scavengers and will eat nearly anything on the aquarium floor. They will relish a dead insect such as a cricket, and will tackle a live one if given the opportunity. They will eat dried blood worms, pellets or regular fish food. They eat out of the water as well as underwater. You may keep these crabs in multi specie Paludariums with many types of species of small fish, crayfish, frogs, and other amphibians. They are fascinating to watch and are quite active during the day. Easy to keep, a great find today for you!
