Description
Redtail Black Highfin Variatus Live-bearer Aquarium Fish
Xiphophorus variatus
Red-tailed Black Highfin Variatus are one of the farm-raised color morphs of the wild type originally found in southern Mexico. The Red-Tailed Black Variatus has a black body color over the front 2/3’s and then a red color in the tail, with a possible yellow dorsal fin. The Variatus is generally more elongated than its close cousin the Platy. The Variatus will prefer a densely planted tank and can be kept in pairs or groups. As an herbivore, plant based foods should be part of their diet, though they will eat most all prepared foods for the aquarium.
