The API GH and KH Test Kit is designed to test tap and freshwater aquariums for general hardness (GH) and carbonate hardness (KH). Rapid pH shifts are the result of low KH levels, which can put stress on a fish. This testing kit allow an aquarist to stabilize the levels within the tank to ensure optimum health of the fish. A guide as to the classifications of hardness in water are as follows, soft is 0 to 75 parts per million, moderately hard is 75 to 150 parts per million, hard is 150 to 300 parts per million and very hard is more than 300 parts per million.
