Nothobranchius is a genus of small, freshwater annual killifish in the family Nothobranchiidae, which was long included in the Aplocheilidae. They are mainly found in E. Africa from Sudan to northern South Africa. Only a 1/2 dozen species are found in the upper Congo River Basin. The greatest species richness is in Tanzania but many of these species have a very small distribution. There are about 60 species total that are a typical annual killifish, meaning they usually only live about a year and then you replace them. There is even a killifish with the shortest life span N. furzeri from Mozambique that only lives for 3 and 6 months. In that time it hatches, matures, breeds and dies. You will experience a longer life span with the Gunther’s Killi but at the same time enjoy the repsoduction and enjoy the new offspring of your original breeders for years to come.
