Size: up to 6″ in aquarium

Swimming Level: Mid to top

Optimal Aquarium Setup: Since Altums are a tall fish, aim for something of at least 18″ or even 30″ tall. Furnish your tank with pieces of bogwood as well as plenty of plants, as these are usually left alone. Altums mix well with most placid Amazonian fishes, including Discus and small tetras, although they may look upon very small fishes as potential snacks

Altums prefer a well-planted tank of at least 30 gallons with soft, slightly acidic water. Rocks and driftwood can be added to the aquarium, but leave plenty of space for swimming.  The Altum Angel needs to be fed a variety of foods including vegetables and meaty foods. Feed them a quality flake food as well as live and frozen foods, such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Origin/Appearance and additional notes: This species is native to South America, namely the Rio Orinoco. There are many similar species of angels.

These are much more difficult to breed than the common angel, but definitely not impossible. In fact, more than one fishkeeper has reported that the species can hybridise with Pterophyllum scalare. Follow the same guidelines as for P. scalare and you probably won’t go far wrong, although softer, more acidic conditions will probably be needed to get wild fish to spawn.
