Aegagropila linnaei
Chlorophyta
Family: Pithophoraceae
Marimo is a rare growth form of Aegagropila linnaei in which the algae grow into large green balls with a velvety appearance. This species can be found in a many lakes and rivers in Japan and Northern Europe. Colonies of marimo balls are known to form in Japan and Iceland, but their population has been declining. These popular little balls have been in the Aquarium Trade since the late 90’s. Ideal for any type of Aquaria generally used in freshwater including Brackish tanks. These are very slow growing plants at a growth rate of about 5 mm per year but can grow much faster when it is in an environment with higher nutrients, sot this is ideal if you have a tank or pond with high nitrates as these are like little nutrient adsorbing sponges that will help you naturally avoid having algae issues.
These plants are NOT banned in the USA. Recent information in Jan 2023 from the federal government on the past heavy regulation of this plant was due to the Zebra Mussels that were on imports of Cladophora aegagropila. There are no Federal laws banning these moss balls as suggested in the past. The species we are selling is Aegagropila linnaei.
