Osphronemus goramy, commonly known as the Giant Gourami, is a massive, highly intelligent freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia. Often referred to as a “water dog” due to its responsive and interactive personality, it can easily recognize its owner. However, because of its exceptional size, it requires a pond-scale habitat to thrive long-term.

Maximum Size: Up to 24 to 28 inches (60–70 cm) in captivity.
Lifespan: 15 to 20+ years with proper care.
Breeding Style: Bubble-nest builder managed by the male.

Color Morphs: Ranges from natural dark gray to these golden-yellow and albino forms.

Temp: 68°F to 86°F (20°C to 30°C)
pH Range: 6.5 to 8.0

Labyrinth Organ: As an anabantid, it breathes atmospheric air. Always leave an air gap at the surface.
Diet and Feeding: hese are Omnivorous but leans heavily toward herbivory as an adult. Main Diet: High-quality floating pellets formulated for large cichlids or omnivores. Greens: Readily consumes blanched peas, lettuce, spinach, cucumber, and fruits. Proteins: Earthworms, prawns, or insects can be offered sparingly (1–2 times weekly). Warning: Overfeeding high-protein foods can lead to fatty liver disease and severe health stunting.

Behavior and CompatibilityJuveniles: Sold as cute 2-to-3-inch fish but grow rapidly within their first few years. Adult Temperament: Generally calm but highly territorial toward its own species or similar large fish.

Tank Mates: Keep only with large, robust, non-aggressive species like datnoids,Oscars, large catfish or even large tinfoil barbs.
