Tilapia are mainly freshwater fish inhabiting shallow streams, ponds, rivers and lakes and less commonly found living in brackish water. Historically, they have been of major importance in artisanal fishing in Africa, and they are of increasing importance in aquaculture and aquaponics.

The Blue Tilapia (Oreochromis aureus) are a popular fish for diet & consumption. When raised properly this fish species has a delicious flavor & light texture. In addition to the excellent food source option, the Blue Tilapia are a popular choice for pond maintenance as its diet consists of many species of invasive aquatic plant types.
As far as permits, the Federal Govt encourages Americans to grow their own food, so that is what you are doing, unless these are for your pond or aquarium, then again, ornamental use or food use does not need permits. Check local laws and restrictions but if the Govt US Dept of Agriculture says to grow your own food, then grow your own food! Obviously we are all responsible fish keepers, so dont dump your fish in lakes or ponds that aren’t yours.
