These South American Cichlids, Central American Cichlids & North American Cichlids form a wonderful group of fish known as New World Cichlids
Most of the Central & North American cichlids are monogamous substrate breeders. South American cichlids and a good part of the Central & North American cichlids originate from one single lineage: the Cichlasomine. Central and North American cichlids that do not originate from Cichlasomine are found in Panama and have developed in South America who then later reached Panama. Since Central & North American cichlids inhabit various waters in a large region of the world, they have naturally adapted to different water conditions and their preferences will vary when it comes to water chemistry, temperature and more.
Fish Temperaments & Attitudes
Most New World Cichlids in this category are peaceful! In fact, ALL Dwarf New World Cichlids are peaceful but also should be kept in groups or colonies for best results. We do not recommend ordering just 2 of any fish assuming you will get a pair, because we do not sell sexed or paired fish unless specified. Here’s a good tip: Example: if you wanted a pair of Apistogramma Borelli, you might want to order 6 or 8 Borelli, allow them to grow together and wait for your females to choose her mate from your batch. This is typical behavior for many fish. ALL fish, regardless of genus may become territorial while breeding, and often this behavior is curbed or eliminated by use of proper stocking of larger colonies of same genus of fish or offering substantial habitat of plants, rocks & driftwood which will make most fish feel more comfortable with their surroundings and calm them down. Many North American Cichlids (except the EBJD or Powder Blue Jack Dempsey) are generally aggressive fish, but will do well in larger tanks with many of it’s own type. Example: a tank full of Firemouth Meeki Cichlids is beautiful & generally peaceful, whereas you would not want to add 1 Firemouth Meeki to a community tank. If you ever need our help in putting together an order of these New World Cichlids, please feel free to contact us. We play with these animals every single day since 1987 and know virtually all there is to know about these animals. We know what is compatible, hearty, pretty, ugly, mean, nice, easy, etc. We are here to help!
